Bridges

Over the last 21 years, ESW have become highly specialised in the supplying and installation of timber bridges

We pride ourselves on being able to install such structures in the toughest environments making them suitable for walkers, cyclists and equestrians.

All timber or steel bridges are built by hand so there is no need for heavy machines. All the team requires is their ATV, a compact tractor, a set of rollers, a bit of muscle and a lot of imagination!

We can supply and install timber bridges up to 12 meters single span for all occasions and situations, be it, urban, rural or picturesque. Steel bridges for single spans over 12m can also be supplied and installed.

We can supply and install bridges for personal use as well as for public access. Unless otherwise requested, all our bridges will  be designedby Chartered Civil and Structural Engineers experienced in bridgework design.  The structure itself will be designed to BS 5400 Part 2 loadings, as amended by BD 37/01 with a design load of 5 kN/meter squared which is appropriate for pedestrian use only, all the timber will be designed to Eurocode 5. Bridleway bridges will be designed as such and be compaitable with BHS requirements.

The timber will be FSC certified and a Chain of Custody Certificate will be provided.

The timber will be treated to BS 4072 with all cuts and drills undertaken before treatment as standard and if required, the treatment certificate will be produced.  The softwood is vacuum pressure treated with Tanalith E preservative to comply with the treatment code THE/GFb for a desired service life up to 30 years.

A non slip surface is provided as standard, a non-slip surface comprising a polyurethane resin base with aggregate overlay will be used.  It complies with the requirements of BD 29/04, Design Manual for Roads and Bridges; Design criteria for footbridges – Part 8, to achieve a mean corrected pendulum test value of 45 units. Other non-slips surfaces are available upon request.

Equestrian bridges will have a BHS approved non-slip surface finish.

It is anticipated that the bridge will require some form of step or steps.  If the mainbeams are submersed into the surface of the pathway then the correct levels of air flow will be restricted and rot will inevitably set in. Therefore steps would be allowed for which will be constructed to the same width and surfacing design as the footbridge and as standard the access steps will conform to BD29/04 Part 6 Dimensional Standards in their height, width and construction.

Ramps for equestian bridges will be supplied as standard.

Restoration and Maintenance

Restoration includes the stripping of all pre-existing protective wood stains and paint and then re-treating the structure to your specification, we are happy to advise you, if necessary on all restoration work. Hand rails, parapets and decking can be replaced with either sustainably sourced hardwood or treated softwood and all iron work can be replaced if requested. Trash dams from around the structure can be removed as can ivy and other vegetation. ESW can arrange the necessary Environment Agency licenses and permits. If scaffolding is not a viable option, ESW can still undertake restoration work whilst conforming to all Health and Safety legislation.
